Routine Appointments     Return to top
Routine Appointments can be booked with any member of the clinical team by telephoning 029 2056 6291. If you have a long term medical problem it is likely you will want to continue seeing the same GP throughout your care. Please be aware there may be a waiting list for the GP of your choice.

Same Day Appointments    Return to top
If your medical condition requires you to see a GP sooner than the next available routine appointment, we have shorter "same day" appointments which are made available first thing each the morning. These appointments cannot be pre-booked before that day.

Phlebotomy    Return to top
Phlebotomy clinics are provided on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. Appointments can be made by telephoning 029 2056 6291. Please note that you require a form completed by a GP before the Phlebotomist can take a blood sample from you.

Please note that INR blood tests are carried out by the Practice Nurse by appointment only - telephone 029 2056 6291.

Home Visits    Return to top
These can be made if you are too ill to attend the surgery, and if the GP deems the visit is medically necessary. Please try to telephone before 11.00a.m. to ask for a home visit. This helps us plan our daily work.

Out Of Hours Emergency Service    Return to top
This service is for acute medical emergencies only. This cover is provided by Healthcare Services 24 Ltd. Should you require this service, please ring 029 2056 6291. You will hear a recorded message then you will be automatically forwarded to Healthcare Services 24 Ltd.

Cytology     Return to top
Smear tests are carried out by the Practice Nurses. Cervical Services Wales operate a reminder service and send a form when you are due for a test.

Adult and Child Immunisations    Return to top
Our Practice Nurses carry out immunisations/vaccinations by appointment only. Please see the separate travel advice for help before travelling abroad.

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre    Return to top
Yellow Fever vaccinations are recommended for travel to some countries. Please leave adequate preparation time for all your vaccinations/immunisations to be completed before you travel abroad. Some injections cannot be given at the same time as others and require at least a week between vaccinations.

A charge of £40 will be made at the time of the vaccination.

Travel Advice    Return to top
Our practice nurse team can provide you with appropriate advice. If you believe you will need travel immunisations please book in with the nurse in good time so that you can have the full, recommended course of immunisations before you travel. We normally recommend that you give us at least 6 weeks notice for most courses of vaccinations. Your first travel clinic appointment will be for half an hour to discuss all your travel vaccination and malarial prophylaxis needs. Please ensure you inform the receptionist at the time of booking the appointment that this is for initial travel advice. Some vaccinations will incur a cost such as Yellow Fever and Rabies vaccinations. Please be aware that you sometimes require a full course of vaccinations or immunisations before you are safe to travel in some countries. You should also realise that you need to start your malaria tablets before you travel so please do not leave your travel preparations to the last minute. Our nurses will not be able to shorten the preparation time.

Deep Vein Thrombosis - DVT
The risk of deep vein thrombosis (which is a blood clot in the veins deep within the legs) and air travel has been well documented recently. There is also a risk of DVT with any journeys where you are unable to walk around normally for a prolonged journey, for example long coach journeys.

Follow this advice to reduce the risk of DVT during travel:

1. Get 'flight socks' (most of the local pharmacies stock them) and use them during travel.

2. Stay hydrated whilst travelling - drink plenty of water (rather than alcohol).

3. Exercise the muscles of your calf at regular and frequent intervals during travel. You can do this by doing the following:

- whilst in your seat push the heel of your foot firmly into the floor and maintain this position for a few seconds before relaxing. Keep repeating this for a few minutes at regular intervals.

- whilst in your seat push your toes firmly into the floor until you are on tip-toes. Maintain this position for a few seconds before relaxing and then keep repeating for a few minutes at regular intervals.

- get up and walk around in the aisles for a few minutes every 30 minutes or so to stretch your legs.
If you have any doubts about your fitness to travel then please book with a doctor to discuss them further.

All patients who travel abroad should ensure that they have adequate travel health insurance. You must declare any pre-existing health conditions - otherwise you may find that your entire policy is invalid and when you fall ill abroad you may be left liable for the entire costs of healthcare.

Minor Surgery    Return to top
We are contracted to carry out Minor Surgery procedures. Your GP will decide if it is appropriate to carry out the procedure at the Health Centre and an appointment will be offered. Dr Harrison, Dr Cooper, Dr Travaglia and Dr Phillips all carry out minor surgery procedures such as joint injections, mole excisions etc.

Diabetic Clinic    Return to top
Dr Harrison is the Lead GP for Diabetes and he and Dr Phillips hold Diabetes clinics weekly.

Your appointment for the clinic is twofold - you will see a Practice Nurse first then the GP.

If you are unable to attend your appointment we would be very grateful if you would contact the Surgery to cancel as there is a high demand for this clinic.

Child Health Surveillance    Return to top
Dr Cooper is the Child Health Lead GP. Clinics for weighing, immunisations and baby checks are carried out by the GP, Practice Nurse and Health Visitor. Parents or guardians will be sent appointments for the child to be brought to the surgery.

It is vital for full courses of childhood immunisations to be carried out in line with current guidelines.

Family Planning     Return to top
Our Practice Nurses can offer family planning advice, pill checks and will give Depo injections by appointment.

Ante-Natal Care     Return to top
Please book a routine appointment with the GP to confirm pregnancy.

Appointments with the Midwife may be booked for Thursday or Friday afternoons.

Counselling     Return to top
We have a Counsellor attached to the Practice. Your GP may recommend a course of treatment; the appointments last for one hour and a course is usually for a six week period.

INR     Return to top
Our Practice Nurses hold daily (except Friday) INR clinics. Appointments may be booked on 029 2056 6291. You will be asked to contact the surgery in the afternoon for the result to ensure you are on the correct level of medication.

If you are housebound we can arrange for a District Nurse to call to take a blood sample for INR testing.
